Description
The Teleweld Series I CWR Rail Heater Car was built by Teleweld in 1969 and has been in use by leading railroad companies ever since. The Series I uses propane fueled, air inspirated rail heating crucibles which offer exceptionally high indicated efficiency factors. Approximately 75% of the available B.T.U.’s in the propane are converted to heat in the crucible. The flame is confined to the sides of the rail which minimizes the possibility of igniting ties and other flammable material adjacent to the road bed.
General
The Teleweld Series 1 CWR Rail Heater Car is a continuously welded rail heater. The Power Car will feature a propulsion system providing travel / work speeds to 3 MPH, Towable up to 20MPH, dual vibrators (2HC), dual heaters (16 burners over each rail) and a 500 gallon, DOT MC-331 certified propane reservoir.
Heating Unit
Heating unit consists of thirty two crucibles mounted on a standard carriages designed for heating on wood ties. The two heating units are capable of producing a combined total of 1,700,000 B.T.U.’s per hour. The burners are propane fueled, naturally aspirated and packed with high temperature mortar to distribute the heat along the rail. The machine will be equipped with Teleweld crucibles. These crucibles are of welded construction and contain brass burner screens.
Propane Tank
Propane carried in a 500 gallon storage tank installed on the Heater Car. The tank is built to ASME Pressure Vessel standards and is certified to conform to DOT MC-331 Specifications. All propane lines are stainless steel, either extra heavy iron pipe, high- pressure flexible hose, flexible tubing or rigid tubing. A heat shield is provided to protect manifolds and fittings.
Wheels, Axles & Bearings
All axles are solid, and utilize double row, self-aligning, non-expansion roller type axle bearings mounted in a cast steel or ductile iron pillow block housing. Split collars are provided to prevent axial movement of the axles. Axles will be 2 15/16 inches in diameter. Wheels will be non-insulated.
Drive System
The Heater Car is powered by an air-cooled Diesel engine coupled to a hydraulic pump. A hydraulic motor coupled to a drive sprocket will provide a 3 MPH operation speed. A clutch is provided to disengage the drive system for towing.
Brake System
A hand brake is provided for parking. Dynamic braking is accomplished utilizing the hydraulic drive motor.
Operator’s Platform
The Heater Car is equipped with an operator’s seat.
Emergency & Safety Systems
The Heater Car is supplied with five emergency stop button which is located on the control panel and four corners of each machine. The emergency stop button will shut off the engine, the propane supply and hydraulics. A hand pump is provided to raise the burners and vibrators to their stored position in case of emergency towing of the vehicle in a power failure.
Engine & Power Train
The Heater Car is operated using an air-cooled diesel engine connected to a gear pump. The engine includes a 12 volt starter, an alternator, and electric high/low throttle control.
Transmission
The Heater Car is equipped with a hydraulic motor which provides speeds from 0 to 3 MPH.
Hydraulic System
The hydraulic system features a gear pump for operating the vibrators, lifting and lowering the burner assemblies and vibrator assemblies and driving the heater car.
